Basinger - Handsome 7''

BASINGER
Handsome
1993 Hair Records

Basinger were a great Yeovil band that seldom get a mention in the higher echeons of the Yeovil hierachy of pop. The greatest Yeovil band of all time was undoubtedly The Chesterfilds and Simon Barber proved there was life afterwards in Yeovil despite many local upsurpers trying there luck, not to mention Beat Hotel and the Urban Folk collective (Simon Tucker take a bow... ) Basingers soaring guitars and backing vocals from Stu Harris totally complimented Simon's driving bass and lead vocal style, none so finer as on the track "No Thrill" which really deserved a far wider play on radio. Basinger can hold there heads up high, they did the Yeovil proud.
They released three singles: Something 7'' (1990), Boomerang EP (1992 Wilde Club Records) and Handsome (1993 Hair Records)
(review taken from www.twee.net)

Many thanks, this is great.
Any chance of anything with the Beat Hotel? Especially the "Hey Hey Audacious" has been long on my wish list
cheers

Thanks for this. Intrigued, hope it's as good as The Chesterfields' " Last Train To Yeovil"
In the meantime becoming a little impetuous for that kick-ass compilation you mentioned last week. However, patience is a virtue.

I have to disagree...the greatest Yeovil band of all time were unquestionably Automatic Dlamini. The Chesterfields would never have sounded as they did on record if it wasn't for the lead singer of Automatic Dlamini as he produced them...along with other Yeovil and Bristol bands of the time...I refer to John Parish now famous for his extensive work with PJ Harvey, another from the Yeovil localle and also I one time member of Automatic Dlamini.

As a Yeovil boy great to see this post today and hearing peeps wax lyrical about bands from my sleepy lil' hometown :)

If I get a chance, I'll be back with a ripped copy of 'Poke it With a Stick's EP. It's around somewhere. Truly one of Yeovil's greatest and unsung power indie bands LOL. Basinger, and many other groups owe their presence to this bunch of wasters and polka dot shirted pretenders. If only for the band members that went on to spawn the Yeovil 'scene'. Them were the days....

I'll be back it'll be worth the wait; If only for another listen to 'Suck Suck Suck'.

Actually if I'm honest PIWAS would probably have dissed the Yeovil thing. More Chard boys if I remember rightly. Parrot defo looked like he was a chard lad. But anyway, Chard or Yeovil, they need to be heard again. It is definitely time for a Poke It With a Stick revival. Actually I'm sure half of Basigner were Poke it With a Stick. That's enough Somerset nostalgia for me. I'm off other the park to neck a bottle of Thunderbird and smoke some JPS.

As an ex-member of Basinger I would say that any association with the awfully twee C86 scene was a huge hinderance to Basinger. Also the band's name was another thing that held us back.

Great to read about this band. Remember getting the single "something". Great indie pop. Even wrote the band and they sent me a t-shirt! Bless them.
