Maximum Bob - Sucker (UK Promo)

MAXIMUM BOB
Sucker (UK Promo)
1992 Not On Label

Notes :
Maximum Bob is an alias Bobby Gillespie used for a one-off 12" he did with The Orb in 1992. Originally there had been plans for Bobby to sing on a track (possibly "Assassin") from the then-forthcoming second Orb album, "U.F.Orb", but that didn't come to fruition. Instead, they recorded "Sucker", which was only ever released on promotional 12" vinyl in the UK.

New Fads - Love It All

NEW FADS
Love It All
1995 Play It Again Sam

Notes :
Fantastic third album. I find it criminal that this group broke up when it did, just as the songwriting blossomed to match the awesomeness of its already-tight instrumentation and studio production. Sadly, the New Fads fell between the cracks: too willfully indie, still draped in post-Madchester stylings during the U.S.-led grunge invasion of 1992, and too anti-pop to be embraced by young UK music fans awakened during the Britpop counter-attack of 1994. This is music beloved by those lucky ones who discover it.

Spirea X - Speed Reaction EP

SPIREA X
Speed Reaction EP
1991 4AD

Spirea X was a short-lived dream pop/noise pop act on the 4AD label, spearheaded by ex-Primal Scream member Jim Beattie. The other members of the group were Judith Boyle and Andrew Kerr. In 1991, the group released the Chlorine Dream and Speed Reaction singles, along with the full-length Fireblade Skies. Combining sweet vocal melodies with alternately noisy and blurry bursts of guitars and dance beats, the record was definitely up on the then-current sound of the U.K., but it failed to make much of an impression with consumers and cynical tastemakers. Spirea X vanished without a trace, but Beattie and Boyle along with former Spirea X manager Simon Dine would later form Adventures In Stereo.

The Dharmas - 3 Miles High

THE DHARMAS
3 Miles High
1996 Rhythm King Records

Notes :
Originating from Hastings, Sussex, England, this briefly celebrated indie rock outfit comprised main songwriter Simon Steadman (vocals/guitar), Ellie Wyatt (violin/vocals), Russell Field (drums), Dave Walton (bass), Chris Murphy (b. Nashville, Tennessee, USA; keyboards) and Dominic Minns (percussion/vocals). After beginning to write his own songs at the age of 15, Steadman formed his first band, named the Dharma Bums, after moving from London to Hastings, where he attended college. The nucleus of the band was formed from the local musicians’ community, and with the name shortened to Dharmas they began touring the UK, including a headlining appearance at the Avlon Stage at the Glastonbury Festival. There they were spotted by Rhythm King Records who eventually signed the band in April 1995. They released their debut single, ‘Runaway’, in August 1995, which reached number 7 in the Independent chart. The second, ‘3 Miles High’, followed in the summer of 1996, but a major label recording contract went sour and derailed the band’s promising career. Steadman, Wyatt, Walton and Field carried on playing together in Steadman.
