Bedazzled - Sugarfree
BEDAZZLED
Sugarfree
1992 Columbia
Notes :
Bedazzled were a UK indie pop group active in the early 1990's. Originating from Gloucestershire and formed from the ashes of Apple Mosaic (led by Ian Dench, later of EMF), the band were signed to Columbia Records and comparable to other organ-led indie dance/pop acts of the era such as Airhead and The Dylans. After several singles (including "Summer Song" and "Teenage Mother Superior") and the 1992 album Sugarfree, they disbanded.

The Sway - Going Blind EP
THE SWAY
Going Blind EP
1994 Bad Habits
Notes :
The Sway, born out of London suburbia, are David Casson - Vocals and Guitar, Jim Kook - Guitars, Paul Hogan - Bass, Sean Kelly - Drums and Percussion and Matt Smith - Keyboards and Samples.
The Sway started life as 'Heavens Echo', in June 1989. At this stage the band were a three piece, consisting of school friends David and Paul and Sean, the fiesty new comer to an established gang of friends. The change of name to The Sway occured in January 1991, following the addition of Jim, a fella seemingly from the right side of the tracks, to the line up.
The boys paid their dues on the London indie scene during 1991 and 1992, which culminated in a deal with Bad Habits records.
Between 1993 and 1995, they went on to headline three UK tours, including two sold out gigs at the legendary Marquee club in London. They also premiered their single and video (for their second EP - Going Blind), at the world famous Planet Hollywod in London.
Support shows with staples on the indie scene, such as Midway Still, Manta Ray, Passion Fruit and Holy Bread, Bang Bang Machine and the Wishplants were a regular occurance and the music press drew comparisons with The Cure, The Bunnymen and The Smiths.
Ian Fortnum of the NME remarked that, "the set's closer, 'Silk', is a bona fide classic; an immense, brooding epic, evocative of vintage U2". High praise indeed.
In May 1995, after over one hundred and twenty shows, two top 100 singles (Silk and Going Blind), one ridiculous video featuring dancing girls (for Going Blind), and seemingly on the verge of fulfilling the prophecy, of being the next big thing, the band called it quits.

Bridge To The Stars EP
1991 Positive Records
Notes :
Great unreleased single by The Headmen. Recorded as the follow up to the "Reach the Sky EP'', the 4 tracks only got as far as the initial mix stage. Before the final mix could take place, the master tapes were destroyed when a fire broke out in the building that housed Beaumont Street Studios in Huddersfield.

The Danny Boys - Days Of The Week
THE DANNY BOYS
Days Of The Week
1987 Ugly Man Records
Notes :
The Danny Boys were Karen Hall (lead vocals), Craig Ferguson (guitar & vocals),
Mick Burton (lead guitar), John Ray (bass) and Vinny Carroll (drums). Formed in the mid 80's they
played a distinct melodic pop reminiscent of the sounds of The Byrds and
Postcard acts like Orange Juice and Aztec Camera. Based in Manchester
they were a staple part of the pre baggy Manchester guitar scene. Toured
with The Railway Children and released a single on Ugly Man Records -
Days of the Week.
In 1988 they disbanded with Craig and Vinny went on to form
Raintree County, a similarly melodic and charming band.

The Wendys - Pulling My Fingers Off

If timing is truly everything, then The Wendys had the misfortune of releasing their debut album shortly before the collapse of their record label, U.K. indie powerhouse Factory. Comprised of John Renton (vocals), Ian White (guitar), Johnny MacArthur (drums) and Arthur Renton (bass), The Wendys rode on a wave of critical acclaim and the usual hype from Factory's Tony Wilson when they emerged from Edinburgh, Scotland, in the early '90s. As the hysteria created by The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays began to dwindle, the Wendys were voted into "next big thing" status. Superstar producer Ian Broudie produced the group's 1991 debut "Gobbledygook" and while it was lauded by critics, the LP was overlooked by the public. When Factory hit the skids, it dragged the band with them; as grunge took command of the airwaves, there was no room for the Wendys' Madchester-inspired guitar pop. In 1999, Starshaped released the band's long-awaited second album "Sixfootwingspan".

The Hollow Men - November Comes

The Hollow Men were swept up in the hype of the late-'80s alternative music scene in Manchester, England. Like Inspiral Carpets and The Charlatans, The Hollow Men revived '60s psychedelia with an acid house groove. Featuring David Ashmoore (vocals), Choque (rhythm guitar), Brian E. Roberts (lead guitar), Howard Taylor (bass), and Jonny Cragg (drums), The Hollow Men were barely distinguishable from their peers. Actually formed in Leeds, England, the Hollow Men adopted the Madchester sound and refused to ditch it, even when grunge and Brit-pop reduced the band's mix of rock and rave into a dated artifact. The Hollow Men's 1990 album "Cresta" was praised by English critics mesmerized by the resurrection of guitar music in Britain. In America, the LP reached the Top Ten of the college radio charts, but vanished once a glut of similarly derivative acts began to appear. In 1994, The Hollow Men released "Twisted" on November Records; the group even produced the album. Utilizing samples and tripped-out guitars, Twisted was barely acknowledged in a year that witnessed the suicide of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and the surge of Brit-pop via Blur and Oasis. "Twisted" received scant press in the U.S. as the Madchester sound became a faint memory outside of England. ~ Michael Sutton, Rovi
