Blab Happy - Mad Surge EP
BLAB HAPPY
Mad Surge EP
1991 F-Beat
British indie band from Leicester comprising Mick McCarthy, Jon Dennis, Tony Owen and Jeremy Clay. After two EPs released on their own Wisdom label won airplay on John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show, and enthusiastic reviews in New Musical Express, Sounds and Melody Maker, they were signed by Demon Records offshoot F-Beat, for whom they released two albums, 1991’s Boat and 1993’s Smothered. The NME’s Gina Morris, wrote of the band: “Blab Happy are a cheerful Leicester four piece, smirking between That Petrol Emotion, Blur, and The Beatles”.
Blab Happy toured in their own right and as support to bands such as Radiohead, Kingmaker, Squeeze. The band split up in 1993, with singer Mick McCarthy and bassist Tony Owen forming Perfume.

Cola Boy - He Is Cola
COLA BOY
He Is Cola
1991 Arista
Cola Boy was an early-90s side project for Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne plus their engineer and mate Ian Catt. ''He Is Cola'' was their second single including three mixes of title track, released in 1991 on Arista Records. The original mix of He Is Cola is the best, sounding like a Saint Etienne album track with a melancholy vibraphone led melody, a funky Burundi drum breakdown in the middle, and wonderfully inane lyrics sung ever so sweetly. "The Nautilus Workout" mix perversely removes the drums, vocals, and melody, and is a drifting version of the song with spacey synths and weird samples of British TV & movies, kids on playgrounds, and even The Beatles. The full-length mix drags on a bit too long but is still quite nice. It is a cool collectors' item, and one you will even enjoy pulling out and listening to every now and then when you need a fix of mindlessly fun music.

Candy Flip - Keep The Faith
CANDY FLIP
Keep The Faith
1991 Gem Records
Candy Flip were a British electronic band who rode the madchester wave in the early 1990s.
Candy Flip were named after the slang term for the practice of taking ecstasy and LSD at the same time which fitted perfectly with the popular rave scene of the time. The band were formed by Danny Spencer (vocals, keyboards), Ric Peet (keyboards) and Kelvin Andrews (keyboards) in 1990. The band had a top three British hit with an electronic cover of the Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever in 1990.
In 1991, Candy Flip released their first album, Madstock . . . The Continuing Adventures of Bubble Car Fish, which combined rave beats with synth pop strongly influenced by bands such as the Pet Shop Boys and The Beloved. A further single ‘This Can Be Real’ fared well on the charts, reaching the UK Top 60.
The band were criticized for jumping on the Madchester bandwagon and were treated by the press as a one-hit wonder. Even so, the album received reasonable reviews when it was released.
Candy Flip split up in 1992 after the English rave and baggy scene faded into history. Peet became a producer and engineer, working with bands such as the Charlatans and Six By Seven. Spencer joined Sound 5.

The Darkside - Found Love
THE DARKSIDE
Found Love 7''
1990 Situation Two
The Darkside was originally formed by guitarist & vocalist Nick Hayden who had previously played drums for Spacemen 3. The band formed in the Spacemen’s hometown of Rugby. Hayden then asked Pete Bain (AKA Bassman), who had left Spacemen 3 just before their 1989 LP Playing With Fire, to join the band. Bain was then joined in the new outfit by his former bandmate, drummer Sterling Roswell (AKA Rosco).
The group debuted in 1990 with the E.P. ‘Highrise Love’ and a UK tour followed but shortly before a gig at Oxford’s Jericho Tavern, Hayden left the band and decided to stay in Oxford where he started a new band called Flite 118 which played many of the songs he had written for The Darkside. Hayden’s departure forced Bain to take over on vocals. The group were signed to Beggars Banquet Records offshoot Situation Two throughout their existence.
The Darkside released an LP, All That Noise. With Rosco moving to keyboards, the group recruited Craig Wagstaff, whom they had known while in Spacemen 3. The Melomania LP then followed in 1992. With the departure of guitarist Kevin Cowen following the LP’s release, Bain then assumed guitar duties for the EP Mayhem to Meditate. When Situation Two rejected the demos cut for a third LP, the band disintegrated.
